CRDA Facade Construction

September 28, 2010 Façade Update
The new boardwalk façade is essentially complete with a few remaining issues to be worked out with the NJ CRDA. (Casino Reinvestment Development Authority) What a tremendous transformation from the look of the aging windows, doors, and masonry. We also stared at roll up security doors, along with the mismatched signage and mismatched awnings for years.
The architect did a great job to capture the Historical period of the Ritz and create a uniform appearance across the boardwalk frontage as well as down the Iowa and Belmont ramps.
We now look upon a very smart and classy façade that is the culmination of 4 years of work by the Board and Management. In conjunction with the façade work, the small (approx. 4’ wide) 40+ year old roof over the storefronts was replaced by the Ritz.
The new lighting of the signage and storefronts is now uniform and under the Association's control. It is our intent to have the area illuminated all night to aid in overall security. A bonus of the façade program is the installation of a door magnet and electric push bar to the second boardwalk door.
The historical plaque donated to us by the Special Improvement District is now permanently mounted on the column next to the boardwalk entrance. Everyday you see many people reading about the history of our Ritz which includes mention of Nucky Johnson our most notorious past resident and the central character in the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire”.
A special thanks to our shop keepers for their patience and cooperation during the construction process. Much of the improvement work was done during the height of their busy summer season and at times was quite disruptive.
The new façade could not have come at a better time as the Ritz faced a huge expenditure to rehab the old deteriorating frontage. Instead we now benefit from the windfall of the CRDA Façade Program which provided the $500,000 plus improvements at essentially no cost to the Ritz. Truly a win win for the Ritz.
